Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Monsterwolf for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com May 9 news, 7-Zip is a very high compression ratio of open source compression software, support LZMA2 and other seven open source algorithms, as well as support a wide range of compression format .7z, small size (1.5MB), perfect function, in addition to the default UI does not meet the domestic aesthetic, there is almost nothing to criticize, can be called a real "small and beautiful".

7-Zip has just released a new 23.00 (beta version), and the last update was version 22.01, released on July 15, 2022.

Most of the 7-Zip source code is distributed under the GNU LGPL license. The AES code is released under the BSD license. The unRAR code restricts licenses based on two licenses: GNU LGPL and unRAR. And users can use 7-Zip on any computer, including those for commercial use, even if they don't donate.

CTOnews.com warns that 7-Zip is mainly used on the Windows platform, but 7-Zip 23.00 (beta version) is also available in Linux and macOS versions, as well as a dedicated host version. In addition, you can also choose the migrated version of 7-zip, p7zip, to use.

7-Zip supports many compressed / uncompressed file formats, including ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, Z, gzip, bzip2, LLHA, tar, cpio, RPM. The CD / DVD image file format ISO has been supported since version 4.42, but the ACE format is no longer supported due to copyright issues. In addition, 7-Zip has also supported enabling decompression and VHD since the 7-Zip 9.14 beta.

Update note:-7-Zip can now use the new ARM64 filter to compress files into 7z and xz packages. The ARM64 filter improves the compression ratio for data that contains executables compiled for the ARM64 (AArch64) schema. In addition, 7-Zip now parses executables (files with exe and dll file name extensions) before compression and selects the appropriate filter for each parsed file

-for x86 executables, use BCJ or BCJ2 filters

-for ARM64 executables, use the ARM64 filter. Previous versions defaulted to all exe / dll files using the x86 filter BCJ or BCJ2.

-the default segment size of the BCJ2 filter is changed from 64 MiB to 240 MiB. This increases the compression ratio of executable files greater than 64 MiB.

-improved UDF support.

-cpio: hard links are supported.

-WIM creates some changes and optimizations to the code.

-when the new 7-Zip creates a multi-volume package, 7-Zip keeps only the volumes that can still be changed open. Previous versions kept all volumes open until the end of the creation of the package.

-on Linux and macOS systems, 7-Zip can now reduce the number of files opened at the same time when 7-Zip opens, extracts, or creates multi-volume packages. This avoids failures due to a large number of volumes because there is a limit in Linux and macOS on the number of files that a single program is allowed to open.

-7-Zip is optimized in the code for context menus in Explorer: it increases the speed of preparing for menu display when external programs select a large number of files for context menus that contain 7-Zip menu commands.

-the code for drag-and-drop operations in the 7-Zip file manager has changed. Drag and drop with the right mouse button is now supported in some cases.

Fix bug:-ZIP package: if you use multithreaded ZIP compression to compress multiple files into an stdout stream (- so option), 7-Zip does not write "data descriptors" for some files.

-ext4 package: 7-Zip cannot correctly extract symbolic links from the ext4 package to the directory.

-HFS and APFS compression packages: 7-Zip incorrectly decodes uncompressed blocks (64 KiB) in the compression fork.

-fixed other known errors.

The 7z format of 7-Zip, which uses LZMA and LZMA2 algorithms, has a very high compression ratio.

Supported format:

Compression / decompression: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM

Extract only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DEB, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, VHD, WIM, XAR, Z

For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio of 2-10% higher than using PKZip and WinZip.

Provide more perfect AES-256 encryption algorithm for 7z and ZIP

7z format supports the creation of self-release packages

Windows Explorer Integration

Powerful file manager

A more powerful command line version

Support for FAR Manager plug-ins

Support for 87 languages
