CTOnews.com, May 9 (Xinhua)-- Apple and Corellium have been at loggerheads in court over the past few years, and the dispute has finally come to an end. A US court ruled that Corellium did not infringe any copyright on Apple products.

The dispute between the two companies was filed in August 2019, and although there are signs of settlement in 2021, the dispute is continuing.

The US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled on Monday that Corellium's CORSEC simulator is protected by the principle of fair use in copyright law, Bloomberg reported. CTOnews.com Note: this principle ensures that copyrighted works can be copied under certain circumstances.

The court agreed with Corellium that the virtual machine running iOS is for security research purposes only.

A panel of three judges said Corellium's products "promote scientific progress through security research on important operating systems". The court added that iOS is "functional operating software that does not belong to the core of copyright".

As a result, Corellium can continue to provide iOS virtual machines to its customers. As early as 2020, a federal judge ruled that Corellium should use iOS code properly.

Corellium's software allows security experts to run virtualized iOS devices for research. Unsurprisingly, Apple claimed that Corellium sold copies of iOS without authorization, while helping hackers find ways to attack iPhone and iPad users.
