CTOnews.com, May 8 (Xinhua)-- NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is developing a snake-like robot that it hopes will one day be sent to a Saturn moon in search of extraterrestrial life.

The project, called EELS, or Exobiology living Life probe (Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor), is a robotic platform that can move and sample through a variety of topography and liquids, exploring internal geological structures, assessing the existence of life, and looking for evidence of life.

EELS's target is Enceladus, one of Saturn's 83 known moons, which is thought to have a liquid ocean beneath its icy surface. In 2005, the Cassini probe discovered plumes from Enceladus's surface, which may be a direct passage to the liquid ocean.

CTOnews.com Note: members of the EELS team moved a 9-link EELS robot to the ice at the Pasadena ice rink. The EELS consists of several identical parts that enable it to propel itself, and uses a rotating propulsion device as a crawler, underwater propeller and grip mechanism, unprecedented functions that allow EELS to enter the vents of feathery material and reach its source.

The EELS project has not yet set a launch date and may take many years to achieve. But if it succeeds, it will be able to delve deeper into areas that were once inaccessible.
