Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen South China Wu Yanzu for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com May 8 news, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opposed Microsoft's $69 billion (CTOnews.com notes: currently about 478.17 billion yuan) acquisition of Activision Blizzard, citing the protection of innovation and choice in cloud games.
CMA says certain services have a leading share of cloud gaming, most notably Microsoft's xCloud offering. CMA believes that Microsoft's current advantage in cloud gaming is quite obvious, and this transaction will further strengthen its advantage and eventually cause the market to lose balance.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said Amazon has 200 million Prime users and he believes free Amazon Luna has the most cloud gamers in the world.
He pointed out that Netflix entered the cloud gaming space and Google exited the cloud gaming space because they realized that providing processing power in the cloud was actually less efficient than Android phones. The company will continue to invest in so-called "cloud gaming," but it's not really a market, and while there's a lot of effort, it hasn't proven successful so far.
He believes that the democratization of gaming is driven by mobile phones, and that the gaming market will continue to be largely driven by mobile games, where Apple and Google are leaders. "Mobile computing power is increasing at an alarming rate, and we think games will be played primarily on mobile phones for the next decade or more."
Over the past decade, games have become mainstream media thanks to mobile phones. Dedicated consoles like the Xbox and the dominant Playstation could be a big hit in developed countries with large middle-class consumers.
He also shared some of his thoughts on the future of the gaming industry and how excessive regulation can limit innovation.
The biggest threat to Western innovation is government regulation, mainly from the UK and US. Regulators charged with protecting consumers and encouraging competition are in fact the biggest obstacle to competition. The European gaming economic market has been vibrant before, and we have seen great potential across Europe over the past decade. Poland, Romania, Ukraine and others have now joined Germany, France and Spain as leaders in game innovation and development. We are seeing countries in the Middle East and even North Africa start to demonstrate innovation and seize opportunities to develop local gaming industries.
Because China's K-12 education system is superior to that of the United States and most Western education systems, China has more math and science graduates with stronger skills than anywhere else in the world. Ten years from now, China may have more outstanding AI and machine learning programmers than anywhere else. I think it will lead to the top gaming companies still being Chinese companies. What impresses me most about Chinese games is how innovative and creative they are. Coupled with long-term vision, rapid execution and excellent management, Chinese game companies have become the world's largest competitors.
