Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, May 7, what does the interior of the moon look like? This question has plagued mankind for many years, but now scientists have finally found the answer. They found that the core of the moon is very similar to that of the earth, with a liquid outer core and a solid core, which is actually a solid ball with a density similar to that of iron.
The major discovery was made by a team led by Arthur Briod, an astronomer at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. They used a variety of data and models, including space missions, lunar laser ranging experiments, changes in the moon's gravity on the earth, changes in the distance between the moon and the earth, and the density of the moon. They compared the data with different types of lunar core models and found that the model most consistent with the observations was a model with a liquid outer core and a solid core.
According to their calculations, the radius of the moon's outer core is about 362 kilometers, and the radius of the core is about 258 kilometers, accounting for about 15 percent of the moon's radius. The density of the moon's core is about 7822 kilograms per cubic meter, which is very close to that of iron.
The study not only confirms a similar conclusion made in 2011 by a team led by NASA Marshall planetary scientist Renee Weber using lunar earthquake data collected by the Apollo mission, but also reveals the existence of material convection in the moon's deep mantle. This means that denser matter inside the moon will sink toward the center, while lighter matter will float upward. This convection may explain why there are some special elements in the lunar volcanic region.
The study also provides new clues to the evolution of the moon's magnetic field. We know that shortly after the moon formed, it had a strong magnetic field, but it began to decay 3.2 billion years ago. The magnetic field is caused by the movement and convection of matter in the core, so what the core of the moon looks like is very important to the reason why the magnetic field disappears.
This study gives us a new perspective on the history of the moon and the solar system. Perhaps in the near future, man will be able to land on the moon again and use seismographs to verify these findings. The study has been published in the journal Nature, CTOnews.com with the original address: click here direct.
