CTOnews.com, May 6 (Xinhua)-- the ESA weather monitoring satellite Meteosat Third Generation Imager-1 (MTG-I1) was successfully launched on an Ariane 5 rocket in December 2022 and deployed in a geostationary orbit 22000 miles above the Earth's equator.

MTG-I1 took the first selfie of the Earth using Flexible Combined Imager on the satellite on March 18, 2023. The image shows much of northern and western Europe and the cloud-covered island of Scandinavia.

It shows a more detailed level of cloud structure at high latitudes in northern Europe. It also shows more details, such as snow in the Alps, sediment in the water off the coast of Italy, and cloud swirls in the Canary Islands.
