CTOnews.com, May 4, if you like fish but don't want to kill endangered fish, you may be interested in the following news: an Israeli food technology company has successfully used 3D printing technology to produce the world's first artificial fish with the same taste as real fish.

The company, called Steakholder Foods, worked with Singapore's Umami Meats to grow fish meat in the laboratory using sea bass cells. Umami Meats extracted cells from sea bass and artificially cultured them into muscle and fat. Steakholder Foods adds these ingredients to a material called biological ink and uses a 3D printer to print out perfect slices of fish. According to reports, Umami Meats plans to introduce the product to the market next year (2024), first in Singapore and then in countries such as the United States and Japan. Mihir Pershad, chief executive of Umami Meats, says his researchers are still studying fish stem cell biology to understand "what cells like to eat and how they grow, and there is not much literature to refer to." He added that they have found a way to make artificial sea bass and eel meat and hope to add three other endangered species in the coming months.

What exactly does this artificial fish taste like? Arik Kaufman, chief executive of Steakholder Foods, explained, "it has the layering of traditional fish, and when fried and seasoned, it's hard to tell the difference."
