CTOnews.com May 4 news, the battery of electric vehicles is an important factor affecting its performance and price, if the battery aging is so serious that it needs to be replaced, then the maintenance cost may be a sky-high price. This is a big risk for consumers who want to buy used electric cars. So how long will the batteries of electric cars last?

Recurrent Motors Inc, a battery analysis company based in Seattle, USA. A large-scale practical study was recently released that collected battery data from 15000 electric vehicles of different brands and models across the United States. These data include charging, battery surplus and estimated mileage. By connecting to the car's communication system, the company tests the battery of each car several times a day.

The study found that the remaining mileage of most electric vehicles driving more than 160000 km still reached more than 90 per cent of their original range. In other words, the battery decay is not obvious. Of course, there are differences between different cars, and Recurrent's data are constantly updated.

Liz Najman, an author of the study and a researcher and marketing manager at Recurrent, said in an interview that she was surprised by the reliability and durability of the battery. "I am surprised that the battery is maintained so well and that few people need to replace it." She said.

The study also tracked two aspects: the battery replacement rate, the percentage of car batteries that fail completely and need to be replaced, and the decline in battery mileage as the battery ages. For the former, only 1.5 per cent of the 15000 vehicles under study, or about 225, had their batteries replaced without an official recall. In terms of the latter, there are great differences between different brands and models, even between the same model. For example, Recurrent found that Tesla's Model S 100kwh battery lost an average of about 120km of range after driving 160000 km. On the other hand, the Model S 70 and 85 kWh battery versions barely lose any range after driving the same distance. In the early BMW i3, whether it was the 2014 or 2017 model, after 160000 kilometers, the average remaining battery capacity was still about 80% of the original capacity. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, which went on sale at the end of 2021, lost about 25km of range after driving 32000 km, but then declined little further when it reached 130000 km.

"for electric cars that have been in production since 2018 or 2019, I think it could take 15 to 20 years before they have significant battery decay." "I don't think I'm the only one who thinks that the batteries of modern electric cars should be more durable than the cars themselves," Najman said.

CTOnews.com notes that Recurrent's latest research is broadly in line with previous studies, including a report released by Geotab, a Canadian transportation technology company, in 2020, which found that battery decay in electric vehicles was mild, losing an average of 2.3 per cent of capacity per year.
