Secure Data Recovery, a company that specializes in recovering data from damaged mechanical hard drives, solid state drives and RAID arrays, analyzed 2007 failed mechanical hard drives and found that the average service life of these hard drives was 2 years and 10 months.

Backblaze is a backup and cloud storage company known for its detailed fault analysis of mechanical and solid-state drives. The company studied 176155 failed mechanical hard drives used in its data centers and found that the average service life of these hard drives was 2 years and 6 months.

Backblaze said their findings are consistent with a report released by Secure Data Recovery in March this year. Although most of the mechanical hard drives currently used by Backblaze have a life span of more than 2 years and 7 months, it believes that this does not affect the calculation of average failure time.

Backblaze also makes statistics on the failure rate of mechanical hard drives of different brands, models and capacities. Among them, Western Digital has the best 16TB WUH721816ALE6L4 performance, with a failure rate of only 0.28%. Seagate's 4TB ST4000DM000 was the worst, with a failure rate of 2.57%.

Backblaze explained that Seagate drives usually have a higher failure rate in their environment, but they are also cheaper, so they are still cost-effective over their useful life.
