CTOnews.com Arizona State University mission principal investigator Craig Hardgrove, speaking Monday at the Interplanetary Minisatellite Conference, said the mission will be officially canceled by the end of May if it still fails to ignite the propulsion system of the Luna-H Map CubeSat.

CTOnews.com Note: Luna-H Map stands for Lunar Polar Hydrogen Mapper and is planned to orbit the moon after liftoff and explore possible water ice reservoirs beneath its surface.

As a secondary payload for the Artemis 1 mission, NASA launched 10 CubeSats, including this one, on November 16, 2022.

Six of them, including Luna-H Map, were able to send confirmation signals to the ground team, while the other four failed and were never heard from again.

Luna-H Map's thrusters use iodine as a propellant, and Hardgrove suspects that CubeSat may have evaporated during long waits inside the rocket.
