CTOnews.com, May 4 (Xinhua)-- shipments of Q1 smartphones in India fell 18 percent year-on-year to 30.7 million units in 2023, the third consecutive quarter of annual decline in the world's second-largest market, according to the TechInsights Wechat official account. This decline is not only consistent with the cyclical trend of Q1 economic weakness this year, but also one of the factors contributing to the decline, taking into account factors such as the recession environment, supply shortages of suppliers, and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, consumers re-examine their spending on technology products.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that Samsung topped the list with a 20 per cent market share in India for the first time in more than 20 quarters, followed by vivo (18 per cent) and Xiaomi (17 per cent).

Four out of every ten smartphones on the Indian market support 5G, and Samsung also tops the list.

Q1 Chinese manufacturers accounted for 72% of India's smartphone market shipments in 2023. Chinese manufacturers' share of India's smartphone market is declining as consumers' preference for smartphones shifts to the middle and high end. In addition, most top Chinese manufacturers are subject to regulatory and tax scrutiny, which in turn leads to a temporary shift in focus.

Given the slow start to the first quarter of this year, the agency expects India's smartphone market to grow slightly in 2023.
