CTOnews.com May 4 news, the head of the UK Competition and Market Authority (CMA), Sarah Cardell, said that the agency will review the technology behind software such as ChatGPT, including issues such as "basic models" and "how the market around these models develops".

Mr Cardell told the Financial Times that CMA would assess "real opportunities in this area" and "what kind of guardrail measures and principles should we put in place to ensure that competition works effectively and consumers are protected".

Earlier this week, the Federal Trade Commission (Federal Trade Commission) warned the industry that it was "highly concerned about how companies choose to use artificial intelligence technologies, including new generative artificial intelligence tools, to have a real and significant impact on consumers".

The chief executives of artificial intelligence companies, including Google, Microsoft and ChatGPT developer OpenAI, will also meet with US Vice President Kamala Kamala Harris on Thursday to discuss the security of their products.

Mr Cardell said CMA's "fact-finding" task of artificial intelligence would allow "a wide range of interested stakeholders, including companies, academics and others, to gather rich and extensive information". She said the review would not target "any particular company".

Large artificial intelligence models, such as OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google Bard's LaMDA, are expensive and difficult to develop and run. As a result, they are still in the hands of a few companies such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, as well as well-funded startups such as Anthropic and Character.ai.

In response to CMA's decision last week to block Microsoft from buying Activision Blizzard, the developer of call of Duty, for $75 billion (CTOnews.com Note: about 518.25 billion yuan), Cardell said the decision was made by an independent team.

The response to Microsoft CEO Brad Smith, who accused it of hampering technological innovation. "I think it's the exact opposite," Cardell said.... I have talked to a lot of [startups] that what they really want is an open and freely competitive market where they can compete fairly and effectively. "

She added that CMA was not "opposed to digital mergers and acquisitions", but stressed that "there is a clear and fairly widespread recognition that there has always been some weak law enforcement in the history of mergers and acquisitions, especially in the field of technology".

Mr Cardell said the new digital markets unit would decide which companies to tailor rules based on its assessment of markets such as the mobile phone ecosystem. In its final report last year, the regulator said there was a strong case for a specific code of conduct for Apple and Google, given their dominant position in the market.
