CTOnews.com, May 4 (Xinhua)-- A team of researchers from the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto recently developed a breakthrough material that converts simple mechanical vibrations into electricity to provide clean energy for sensors in devices such as the Internet of things.

The groundbreaking material, which took 10 years to develop, is based on the piezoelectric effect (piezoelectric effect), which generates an electric current when pressure is applied to certain substances.

Traditional piezoelectric materials used in commercial equipment have limited power generation capacity and usually contain lead, posing a threat to the environment and human health.

To solve the environmental problem, the researchers used the Jahn-Teller effect to develop a molecular metal halide compound called edabco copper chloride, which generates energy after extrusion.

The team made the material into a 2.5-square-centimeter nano-generator with a business card thickness. Without the need for lead or non-renewable energy, this kind of nano-generator can collect mechanical vibration from various sources, such as human running and vehicle operation, so as to generate electricity.

Dr. Dayan Ban, a researcher at the Institute of Nanotechnology in Waterloo, explained that potential applications of the material include supplying power to sensors in aircraft sensor monitoring systems or battery-free pacemakers.

CTOnews.com is enclosing a detailed paper on this material, which can be read by interested users.
