CTOnews.com May 3 news, do you often worry about remembering all kinds of passwords? Are you worried that your password will be stolen or leaked by hackers? Do you think it's too troublesome to enter a password and second verification every time you log in to your account? To address these concerns, Google has introduced a new feature called Passkey, which allows you to log in to your Google account in a simpler and more secure way without using a password.

What is Passkey? Passkey is a cryptography-based authentication technology that replaces your Google account password with passwords (PIN codes, fingerprints, facial recognition, etc.) that already exist on your device (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, etc.). In this way, when you log in to your Google account, you only need to unlock your device and access your account directly without having to enter a password or re-verify. This not only saves time, but also improves security.

Why use Passkey? Google said passwords are no longer adapted to the modern network environment because they are easy to be reused, cracked by hackers and deceived by phishing. Passkey can avoid these problems because they cannot be written down or accidentally leaked to bad people, nor can they be affected by cyber attacks or data breaches. Google believes that Passkey is more powerful than most current secondary authentication methods, allowing you to skip password and secondary authentication steps.

How to use Passkey? CTOnews.com learned officially from Google that to use Passkey, you need to create a Google account Passkey for each device. In the background, the device stores a private key, and Google sends a corresponding public key. When you log in, Google will ask your device to sign a unique challenge code with a private key, and your device will do so only after you unlock it. Google then verifies the signature with the public key. If you log in with a new device (or temporary use), you can scan a QR code with the Passkey on your phone and check the distance via Bluetooth. On new devices, you just need to select "use Passkey on other devices" and follow the prompts. This doesn't automatically transfer the Passkey to the new device, just use the screen lock and distance on your phone to approve an one-time login. If the new device supports storing its own Passkey, Google will separately ask if you want to create one on the new device.

Currently, Passkey is just another option for Google accounts to log in. The existing login method has not changed, and the password is the backup method (for cases where the device does not support Passkey). But it may change in the future, Google said:

Passkey is still a new technology and will take some time to become universal everywhere, but creating a Passkey today still has security benefits because it allows us to pay closer attention to logins that fall back to passwords. As Passkey gains more support and familiarity, we will conduct more scrutiny of these behaviors.
