The laboratory is not located in Tesla's Nevada super factory, but in a place not far from Reno. Tesla said when applying for the license that the purpose of the laboratory is to carry out "manufacturing research and development (lithium laboratory)" and will carry out some upgrades to existing facilities to support tool installation and process optimization.

Why did Tesla set up such a laboratory? CTOnews.com notes that this is related to the company's ambitions in the battery field. Tesla made it clear on a recent investor day that his goal is to increase production capacity tenfold by the end of the century. In order to achieve this goal, Tesla had to participate more deeply in the battery supply chain.

We know that lithium is one of the important raw materials of batteries, but the supply of lithium on the market is not sufficient at present. Therefore, Tesla is trying to solve this problem from many aspects. On the one hand, the company is building a new lithium refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, which will use a new processing technology to convert lithium into battery-grade lithium hydroxide. On the other hand, Tesla also plans to mine lithium in Nevada and use a new technology to extract lithium. However, Tesla has not released any more information since the plan was first announced in 2020.

It is unclear what role the new lithium laboratory will play in these projects, perhaps to test and improve lithium mining and processing technologies, or to research and develop more efficient and environmentally friendly lithium batteries. In any case, this shows Tesla's attention and investment in the battery supply chain.
