CTOnews.com, May 3, a recent move by Microsoft caused dissatisfaction among IT administrators when the company announced that it would force web links opened by Outlook and Teams to use Edge browsers instead of user-set default browsers. This means that whether users prefer to use Chrome or Firefox, they will automatically jump to the Edge browser by clicking a link in Outlook or Teams.

Microsoft said it was doing so to provide a "single view" that allows users to see both open links and emails or chats that provide links in Edge browsers. Microsoft also said that the change will not affect the default browser settings in Windows, but will only take effect in Outlook and Teams. Microsoft seems to be gradually promoting this feature among Microsoft 365 users. IT administrators will be notified 30 days in advance before it is rolled out to Outlook, and Teams will follow suit.

However, the change was not welcomed by IT administrators, with many posting on Reddit complaining about Microsoft's approach. They believe that Microsoft ignored users' choices and preferences and forcibly promoted its own Edge browser. Some IT administrators say they can block this change by modifying the enterprise-class Microsoft 365 policy, but for some small businesses, they may need to set it up separately on each computer, which will cause them unnecessary trouble.

CTOnews.com notes that, in fact, this is not the first time Microsoft has tried to force users to use Edge browsers. Back in 2018, Microsoft tried to get all links opened in Windows 10 email apps to use Edge browsers, but gave up because of opposition from Windows 10 testers. In 2020, Microsoft tried to change Chrome's default search engine to Bing through the Office 365 installer, which also caused dissatisfaction among IT administrators. In Windows 11, Microsoft has also taken some measures to restrict users from changing default applications and to force the use of Edge browsers in some system features.

Although the Edge browser itself is a good browser, Microsoft continues to promote it in this way, which may backfire and make users feel disgusted and bored. Microsoft should respect users' choices and preferences, rather than using coercive means to increase the market share of Edge browsers.
