CTOnews.com, May 3, Tesla may be about to export electric vehicles from China to North America, including Model 3 and Model Y models. The news attracted the attention of the industry because Elon Musk, founder of Tesla, had explicitly denied the plan.

Last month, Tesla added a rear-drive version of the Model Y to the online configurator on Canada's official website. Soon after, Reuters quoted sources as saying that Tesla will start exporting a Chinese-made Model Y model from China to Canada, which will be the first time Tesla will ship a car from China to North America. The model is likely to be a rear-drive version of the Model Y produced by Tesla's Shanghai factory, which also produces the Model 3 rear-drive version.

A netizen recently posted a photo on Twitter showing a left-rudder Model 3 unloaded at Shanghai Port with a North American rear license plate frame and two Model Ys. It is said that where the vehicles were unloaded, a ship was on its way to the port of Tacoma in the US state of Washington. Port Tacoma is only 175 miles from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (CTOnews.com Note: about 281.64 kilometers).

At present, this news has not been officially confirmed by Tesla, but it is reasonable to a certain extent. Tesla decided to export the Model Y rear-drive version from China to Canada because the model is eligible for subsidies in Canada, while the cheaper Model 3 rear-drive version is likely to enjoy Canadian policy preferences.

Although Tesla has two factories in the United States that produce Model 3 and Model Y electric cars (Fremont, California and Austin, Texas), these factories are mainly designed to meet the needs of the US market. Moreover, the Shanghai factory has the lowest cost structure of all Tesla's manufacturing plants, so from an economic point of view, Tesla's export of electric cars from China to Canada may be a wise move.
