CTOnews.com Amazon announced a new Matter update for Alexa on Tuesday that includes support for Thread, settings on iOS, and a new version of the Works with Alexa program.

After launching the Android version, Amazon is fulfilling its CES promise to support iOS settings for Matter devices, which will enable Matter devices (CTOnews.com notes: reportedly including those that used to only support Apple Home) to work with Amazon Alexa and Echo speakers.

Amazon claims to have more than 100 million Matter-enabled Echo devices on the global market. Amazon customers have already connected more than 300 million smart home devices to Alexa and will expand with the launch of Matter.

Matter on Alexa will now also support Thread, not just Wi-Fi connectivity; the update covers second-generation Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot devices as Matter controllers, and Echo (4th generation) as Thread border routers.

To support Matter, Amazon announced new versions of Works with Alexa (WWA) and Frustration-Free Setup (FFS) for Matter devices, which will allow users to use the product with Alexa and simplify setup.

With the launch of the firmware update, users can now begin updating their compatible Echo devices and expanding their smart home.
