Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, May 2 (Xinhua) Microsoft's ethics and social team of artificial intelligence (AI) was disbanded in March 2023, causing questions and criticism from the outside world. In the face of frequent scandals and disputes in the AI field, how can Microsoft ensure that its future AI products can be developed and used responsibly? Natasha Crampton, Microsoft's chief responsible AI officer, recently published an article on Microsoft's "issues" blog explaining why Microsoft disbanded the AI ethics team and its new AI management strategy.
Crampton said the AI ethics team was disbanded because "it is not enough for one team to be responsible for the ethics or responsibilities of AI." She said Microsoft has taken the same approach as its privacy, security and accessibility team, that is, to "integrate responsible AI into the entire company." This means that Microsoft has senior staff in each core business unit who are "responsible for promoting responsible AI" and "a network of responsible AI' advocates with different skills and roles to communicate more frequently and directly."
In addition, Crampton revealed that Microsoft currently has nearly 350 people engaged in responsible AI work, of which 129 are full-time, and the rest make responsible AI a core part of their work. After disbanding the AI ethics team, Crampton pointed out that some team members were then assigned to various departments of the company. However, seven members of the team were also fired during Microsoft's move to cut 10,000 jobs in early 2023.
There has been little scandal and controversy in the AI sector in recent months, and it is these concerns that have led to opposition to the dissolution of Microsoft's AI ethics team. If Microsoft lacks a dedicated team to help guide its AI products in a responsible direction, it is believed that it will be difficult to curb the abuses of its Bing chat robots. Microsoft's latest blog post is undoubtedly an attempt to allay public concerns about this issue. Instead of completely abandoning its AI efforts, Microsoft is trying to ensure that all teams in the company are in regular contact with experts in responsible AI.
However, there is no doubt that shutting down its AI ethics and social team has not given Microsoft a good reputation, and there is still a long way to go to reassure the public on this topic. In fact, even Microsoft itself thinks ChatGPT should be regulated. CTOnews.com previously reported that just yesterday, Geoffrey Hinton, the "godfather of AI", left Google and said he was very upset about the speed and direction of AI's expansion. Microsoft may not ignore concerns about the ethical development of AI, but whether its new strategy is correct remains to be seen and verified.
