Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, May 2 (Xinhua)-- Samsung and LG are investing billions of dollars in new production lines in order to capture the OLED medium-sized screen market. These screens are expected to be used in Apple's future iPad and Mac products, giving users a better visual experience.
Image source: according to Nikkei Asia, OLED screens are harder to make than LCD screens, especially medium-sized screens. But OLED screens have the advantages of higher contrast, lower power consumption and thinner thickness, so they are favored by companies such as Apple. Currently, Apple's iPhone and Apple Watch already use OLED screens, while iPad and Mac still use LCD screens.
Rumor has it that Apple plans to launch iPad Pro with OLED screen in 2024 and MacBook Pro with OLED screen in 2026. In order to meet Apple's needs, both Samsung and LG are accelerating the expansion of OLED production capacity and adopting more advanced technologies to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.
Samsung is investing $3.05 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 21.137 billion yuan) in its main plant in Tangjin, South Korea, to build a new OLED production line. These production lines will use 8.6 generation glass substrates, which are more than double the area of the sixth generation glass substrates currently used, and can produce more screen panels. Samsung is expected to start mass production of medium-sized OLED screens in 2026, just in time for the launch of the new MacBook Pro.
LG has invested $2.5 billion (currently about 17.325 billion yuan) in its plant in Paju, South Korea, to build a new OLED production line. LG has yet to keep pace with Samsung and still uses sixth-generation glass substrates. However, LG also has its own advantages, that is, it has a unique white light OLED technology, which can provide a more uniform and stable display effect.
Samsung and LG are both global OLED market leaders, accounting for about 80 per cent of the market. But they also face fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers, such as Beijing Oriental, Vicino, and Huihui Optoelectronics, which have occupied a dominant position in the LCD market and are actively expanding OLED production capacity. However, Chinese manufacturers have not made significant progress in medium-sized OLED screens, so medium-sized OLED screens are seen as the last growth market in the display industry and a competitive target for Samsung and LG.
