Beijing, May 2 (Xinhua) Geoffrey Hinton (Geoffrey Hinton), known as the godfather of AI, announced on Monday that he had resigned from Google. For half a century, Hinton has been developing the core technology behind chatbots such as ChatGPT. But now, he is worried that AI will cause serious harm.
Hinton Hinton, the godfather of AI, is a pioneer of AI. In 2012, the technology developed by Dr. Hinton and two graduate students at the University of Toronto became the knowledge base of the AI system. Today, the giants of the technology industry believe that AI is the key to their future development.
Regretting the development of AI, however, on Monday, he officially joined a growing number of AI critics. They believe that these companies are actively developing products based on generative AI, and that popular chat robots such as ChatGPT are being developed rapidly, which is heading for danger.
Hinton says he has quit his job at Google so he can talk freely about the risks of AI. He has worked at Google for more than a decade and has become one of the most respected figures in the field. Hinton says he now regrets the work he has done in his life.
"I comfort myself with my usual excuse: even if I didn't do it, someone else would do it." Hinton said in a lengthy interview at his Toronto restaurant last week. It's only a few steps away from where he and his students made the AI breakthrough.
Dr Hinton's transformation from AI pioneer to doomsday prophet marks an extraordinary moment for the technology industry at perhaps the most important inflection point in decades. Industry leaders believe that the new AI system could be as important as the web browser launched in the early 1990s and could lead to breakthroughs in areas ranging from drug research to education.
But to the annoyance of many in the industry, they are worried that they are releasing something dangerous into the wild. Generative AI has become a tool to create false information. Soon, it may pose a threat to employment. The biggest worry in the technology industry says it could pose a threat to mankind at some point in the future.
"it's hard to imagine how you can stop the bad guys from using it to do bad things," Hinton said.
Since OpenAI released the latest version of the ChatGPT-4 model in March, thousands of technology leaders and executives, including Mr Musk, have signed a joint letter calling for a six-month moratorium on the development of a more advanced model than ChatGPT-4 because AI poses a "profound risk to society and mankind". A few days later, 19 current and former leaders of the Association for the Promotion of artificial Intelligence, a 40-year-old academic organization, issued their own open letters warning of the risks of AI. The group includes Eric Eric Horvitz, Microsoft's chief scientific officer. Microsoft has applied OpenAI's technology to a range of products, including Bing search engine.
Hinton did not sign the two letters. He said he didn't want to publicly criticize Google or other companies before resigning. Last month, he informed the company that he would resign. On Thursday, he spoke on the phone with Google's parent company, Alphabet CEO Sandal Pichai (Sundar Pichai). He refused to discuss publicly the details of the conversation with Pichai.
"We remain committed to taking a responsible attitude towards AI," Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist, said in a statement. "while we are constantly learning to understand emerging risks, we are also making bold innovations."
The AI danger comes faster. Mr Hinton believes that as companies improve their AI systems, they will become more and more dangerous. "look at what happened five years ago and now," he said of AI technology. "accept the differences and spread them out. It's horrible."
Until last year, he said, Google had been the "right manager" of the technology, taking care not to release things that could cause harm. But now, Microsoft has enhanced Bing's search engine with chat robots, challenging Google's core business, leading Google to compete to deploy the same technology. 'Tech giants are caught in a competition that may be unstoppable, 'Mr. Hinton said.
What worries him most at the moment is that the Internet will be full of fake photos, videos and text, and ordinary people will "no longer know what is real". He also worries that AI technology will eventually upend the job market. Today, chatbots like ChatGPT tend to complement human workers, but they can also replace paralegals, personal assistants, translators and others who handle mechanized tasks. "it saves heavy work, but it may take more than that." Hinton said.
In the future, he worries that future versions of AI technology will pose a threat to humans because they often learn unexpected behaviors from the vast amounts of data they analyze. This is a problem, he says, because individuals and companies not only allow AI systems to generate their own computer code, but also allow them to run it themselves. He is worried that one day truly autonomous weapons-- those robots-- will become a reality.
"some people believe that this kind of thing will actually become smarter than people," he says. "but most people think it's still far away. I also thought it was far away. I think it will take 30 to 50 years or more. Obviously, I don't think so anymore."
Hinton said that when people asked him how to study potentially dangerous technologies, he would repeat the words of Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb in the United States: "when you see something that feels good technically, you do it."
