CTOnews.com May 2 news, IBM has just released the first quarter of fiscal year 2023 results. IBM's first-quarter revenue was $14.252 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about RMB 98.766 billion), up 0.4 per cent year-on-year, excluding exchange rate changes, up 4.4 per cent; net profit was $927 million, compared with $733 million in the same period last year; profit from continuing operations was $934 million, up 41 per cent from $662 million a year earlier.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna told Bloomberg on Monday that the company would suspend hiring because about 7800 jobs could be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) in the next few years. In total, Krishna says there are about 26000 employees in these non-customer-facing positions.

Within five years, 30% of non-customer-facing jobs are likely to be replaced by artificial intelligence and automation, he points out. As a result, recruitment in back-office functions such as human resources will be suspended or slowed, says Mr Krishna.

Tuyuan Pexels in November last year, Microsoft-supported OpenAI launched the popular chat robot ChatGPT. Since then, artificial intelligence has attracted wide attention all over the world. The personal computer maker told the Wall Street Journal that layoffs may include not filling jobs that have been left vacant due to wastage.
