Thank CTOnews.com netizens for the delivery of suitcases, luggage and Harry12345! CTOnews.com May 1, RED.com LLC sued Nikon in May 2022, alleging that the N-RAW format introduced in Nikon Z 9's flagship camera 2.0 firmware update infringed seven patents.

The latest patent litigation documents show that the lawsuit was dismissed by a US court a few days ago and ended in a dramatic way.

The plaintiff RED.com LLC and the defendant Nikon Inc. and Nikon Co., Ltd. hereby dismiss this action in accordance with Federal Civil procedure Rule 41 and in accordance with this joint motion, without prejudice to all claims, counterclaims, causes of action, defences and parties, and each party bears its own legal fees and fees.

The lawsuit never entered the jury trial stage because both RED and Nikon filed a joint motion to dismiss the lawsuit. It is not clear why the two sides did so, and an out-of-court settlement may have been reached.

CTOnews.com has not yet found any statements from RED or Nikon.

Nikon Z 9 released a 2.0 firmware update last year, which supports its own "N-RAW format", supporting 8.3K 60-frame RAW video and 4.1K 60-frame ProRes RAW HQ. The format benefits from intoPIX's TicoRAW technology, which RED claims infringes its patent and sues Nikon Z 9 for using its patent for video compression.

This is not the first time RED has filed a lawsuit to protect its RAW patents. It has already fought lawsuits against Kinefinity, Sony, Nokia and others. Now that both parties have chosen to drop the lawsuit, the Nikon Z 9 camera will continue to use the internal recording N-RAW format.

In addition, Nikon will hold a new product launch on May 10, and the Nikon Z 8 flagship camera is expected to be launched. We can look forward to whether it will be recorded in N-RAW format.
