Italy said it would temporarily ban ChatGPT from operating in its territory based on the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law.

Subsequently, OpenAI filed a remedy in Italy over the ChatGPT ban, promising to handle user data more transparently.

As CTOnews.com previously reported, OpenAI was asked to inform Italian users of the "methodology and logic" behind processing the data needed for ChatGPT to run. It also requires OpenAI to provide tools so that people affected by the data (including non-users) can request that inaccurate personal data generated by the service be corrected or deleted if it cannot be corrected.

Garante said OpenAI should also allow non-users to object "in an easy way" to processing their personal data to run its algorithms. It also requires the company to roll out an age verification system by the end of September that excludes access from users under the age of 13.
