This "organizational dysfunction and lack of ambition" makes Apple lag behind competitors in improving Siri and the technologies behind it, such as OpenAI, Microsoft and Google, and even some Apple employees are skeptical about its future.

The Tuyuan Pexels report is based on "interviews with more than 30 former employees of Apple's AI and machine learning team." CTOnews.com noted that earlier this month the New York Times published a similar report explaining how Siri was built on a "clumsy" database, making it "weeks" for Siri to update its "basic functions."

One of the major problems facing the Siri team is staff turnover. According to The Information, Apple lost three Siri engineers who joined Google: Srinivasan Venkatachary, Steven Baker and Anand Shukla. The three employees first joined Apple in 2019, when Apple acquired their startup, Laserlike. The three engineers have been working on the Siri search function, but they think Google is a better place to work on large language models (LLM), the technology behind Google's Bard and ChatGPT. Reported that Google is so eager to get the three engineers, "so much so that its CEO Sandal Pichai personally lobbied the team." In the case of Apple, CEO Tim Cook also "tried to persuade them to stay", but failed.

Within Apple, "Siri is still ridiculed by employees," the report said. At one point, the team working on Apple's head display was so disappointed with Siri that it considered "building other methods" to control the head display with voice technology.
