Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, April 27 (Xinhua)-- in order to comply with the EU Digital Services Act, Apple was forced to disclose the number of monthly active users of App Store in Europe, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS, 9to5 Mac reported.

Apple says iOS App Store has 101 million users in Europe, while iPadOS has 23 million. Mac App Store has 6 million, tvOS App Store has 1 million, and watchOS App Store has less than 1 million users.

Apple also said that fewer than 1 million people in Europe still use Apple Books and Podcasts paid subscriptions each month (CTOnews.com Note: the report says these figures are based on averages for the six-month period ending January 2023).

The EU Digital Services Act sets out rules for "super-large online platforms", which are defined as platforms with more than 45 million monthly active users. Apple says it treats the App Store of each operating system as a separate platform, so only iPhone iOS App Store can be classified as a "very large" online platform.

However, Apple said it would "adjust" all its App Store to meet the requirements of the EU's Digital Services Act, although the law only requires iOS App Store compliance. DSA rules include protecting children from advertising and limiting the spread of misinformation. Apple said, "the goal of DSA is consistent with Apple's goal of protecting consumers from illegal content."

The focus of the EU Digital Services Act is different from that of the Digital Market Act, which focuses on the monopoly power of online gatekeepers. The Digital Markets Act could force Apple to support alternative app stores and app side loads on the iPhone, at least for its European customers.
