Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com April 27 news, car touch screen really convenient? This seemingly high-tech design actually brings a lot of trouble and danger to the driver. Fortunately, some automakers have finally recognized this problem and are beginning to re-use physical buttons and knobs to control various functions of the car.
Touchscreen adoption in cars can be traced back to Tesla, which calls its cars "tablets on wheels." Many other car brands have followed suit, using touch screens as a sign of fashion and technology. But touch screens aren't any better than buttons and knobs, and they're actually cheaper. Matt Farah, a car critic and host of the YouTube channel and podcast The Smoking Tire, says touchscreens cost less than $50, while buttons and knobs are much more expensive.
The biggest problem with touch screens is that they distract drivers. Think of the days when you could adjust your radio or air conditioner without looking at the dashboard. But now you have to stare at the screen and navigate through various menus to find the features you want. A study by the AAA Foundation found that using a touch screen can distract drivers for up to 40 seconds, enough to drive half a mile at 50 mph, which is dangerous for driving.
Ironically, almost everyone thinks that using a mobile phone while driving is dangerous, but now all new cars put a tablet inside, and some operations can only be used through the tablet.
In recent years, more and more consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with touch screens. They argue that touch screens neither enhance the driving experience nor increase safety, but confuse them. Some media outlets have also published articles critical of touch screens, pointing out that they are "created to solve problems that do not exist in themselves." Automakers noticed this and began to change their design philosophy.
The first to take action was Porsche, a luxury brand that restored physical buttons and knobs for the 2024 Cayenne. Volkswagen Group followed suit, eliminating the annoying steering wheel touch controls and saying future electric cars will also add more physical buttons. At the same time, some car brands that have never used touch screens have also begun to advertise their advantages, with Nissan and Hyundai both saying they insist on using physical buttons and knobs to meet consumer demand.
Of course, not all automakers have abandoned touch screens. Brands such as mercedes and gm continue to stick with large size and complex touch screen systems, and the latter refuse to even work with popular mobile apps such as apple CarPlay and android Auto.
