These platforms now have four months to comply with the rules of the Digital Services Act, including providing netizens with information on why they are recommended to certain sites or other details, and the possibility of exit.

All advertisements on these platforms must also indicate who paid for them, and contracts with terms and conditions must have an "easy to understand" summary and use the different languages of the country in which they operate.

Failure to implement these measures could lead to a fine of up to 6 per cent of the company's global turnover, which could eventually lead to a temporary ban on operations in the region.

European regulators have previously warned Elon Musk, chief executive of Twitter, that his company needs to do a lot of work to comply with the new rules.
