Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, April 26 (Xinhua)-- General Motors (GM) announced Tuesday that it will stop production of its Chevrolet Bolt electric car by the end of this year in preparation for the launch of electric pickup trucks based on next-generation battery technology next year.

The Bolt, GM's first mass-market electric car, went on sale in 2016 with a starting price of about $35000 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 243000 yuan). The Bolt has two models, the Bolt EV and the larger Bolt EUV, which account for the vast majority of GM's current electric car sales.

However, the battery unit used by the Bolt is different from other electric vehicles to be launched by GM, which uses GM's homegrown Ultium platform, which provides higher energy density and longer range, while the Bolt uses older designs and chemicals. The Ultium platform will be used in GM's future electric vehicles, including GMC-branded Hummer and Cadillac-branded Lyriq.

Mary Barra, GM's chief executive, said on an investor conference call on Tuesday that the plant in Orion, Michigan, which currently produces Bolt, would be revamped to start producing electric versions of Silverado and Sierra pickups next year. These two pickups are one of GM's best-selling products.

Barra said that when the O'Ryan plant reopens and reaches full production, the number of employees will nearly triple and the annual production capacity will reach 600000 electric pickups.

GM plans to sell more than 400000 electric vehicles in North America from early 2022 to mid-2023 and build annual production capacity of 1 million electric vehicles in the United States and China. Through these measures, GM hopes to catch up with Tesla, the industry leader in electric vehicles.

Although the Bolt is a relatively low-cost electric car, it has not achieved the expected sales results. In addition, GM had to recall all manufactured Bolt due to a number of fires caused by supplier-related battery problems.

This fall, GM will launch a new Equinox EV, an electric car that costs about $30, 000.
