CTOnews.com April 25 news, today, AMD officially launched the new Ruilong Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors, two products specifically for handheld game PC products, based on TSMC 4nm technology.

First of all, the Ruilong Z1 Extreme has eight Zen 4 cores with a total of 16 threads, as well as 12 RDNA 3 cores and 24MB cache, which nominal delivers 8.6 TFLOPS of raw graphics performance, close to the Sony PS5 of 10.28 TFLOPS and well ahead of Steam Deck's 1.6 TFLOPS.

In contrast, the Ryzen Z1 has only 6 cores, 12 threads, 4 GPU cores and 22MB cache, which is theoretically about 55% stronger than Valve's custom "Aerith" chip (Zen 2+RDNA 2).

At the same time, AMD also gives some game performance data, for example, you can use 1080p 60fps + screen to play demanding 3A masterpieces like "Wild Dart 2" and surpass 120fps in "extreme Speed: horizon 4" (CTOnews.com Note: data is based on the Asustek ROG Ally handheld "Turbo mode" with Z1 Extreme, with a maximum 30W performance release).

Of course, this is mainly due to AMD Radeon Super Resolution, otherwise you can only play 720p games.

AMD also said that both Z1 and Z1 Extreme will support Radeon Chill, which can be automatically adjusted according to the frame rate target you choose, resulting in a significant improvement in battery performance. Of course, Asustek ROG Ally also has its own frame limiting function.

"I think the current situation is that the limiting factor is not CU, but LPDDR5."in many cases, faster memory is what these games really need," said Don Walligroski, a senior technology marketing manager at AMD.

AMD said the Z1 and Z1 Extreme are temporarily owned by Asustek, but we may see other partners launch models based on these or a new generation of Z-series chips in the future. Currently, this product line is the partnership between the AMD games department (responsible for Radeon GPU and the client (responsible for Ryzen processors).

As for the Ruilong 7840U, this chip seems to be exactly the same as the Z1 Extreme, but it is not an exclusive sku, so it may appear in the handset of any competitor. But the details Woligroski can't say, "We haven't officially released any 7000U series parts yet."

The AMD press release also revealed that Asustek will announce the pricing of ROG Ally and "more information" about the listing date on May 11.
