Tesla's Shanghai company began producing Model Y for Canada earlier this month, according to people familiar with the matter. According to the production memo, vehicles have been designed and tested for export to North America, with a target of producing nearly 9000 vehicles this quarter.

It is reported that the price of this model is 10, 000 Canadian dollars lower than the Model Y currently sold in Canada, and is in line with the Canadian government's subsidy policy for new energy vehicles.

Tesla's Shanghai plant is Tesla's largest and most cost-effective factory in the world. Last year, it exported more than 270000 Model Y and Model 3 cars to Europe and other markets, accounting for 1/5 of Tesla's global sales. Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, told analysts last week that Tesla's Shanghai plant had "the lowest cost structure".

Tesla's Shanghai plant uses lithium-iron-phosphorus batteries to produce Model Y, which is cheaper, safer and more durable than other types of batteries. Tesla's factory in the United States is introducing a more powerful battery, called 4680.

Tesla said on the Canadian website that the new Model Y rear drive version is expected to be delivered to customers between May and July with a mileage of 394km. The entry-level Model Y currently sold in the United States is an all-wheel drive version with a range of 449km. The new Model Y costs 44275 Canadian dollars (225000 yuan) in Canada, which is 2715 Canadian dollars (13800 yuan) cheaper than the American version.

Tesla has cut the price of US Model Y three times since the start of the year as part of a strategy to boost sales, which also cut its profit margins in the first quarter and sparked a price war for electric vehicles.

Tesla is not the only company that exports electric cars from China. Renault's Dacia brand also exports a low-cost electric car, the Spring, to Europe, while BMW exports its iX3 electric SUV from China to Southeast Asia and Europe.
