The 20th National Reading Survey was launched in August 2022, and questionnaire collection and questionnaire review were carried out simultaneously from October 2022 to February 2023. The comprehensive reading rate of China's adult citizens in various media, including books, newspapers and digital publications, was 81.8% in 2022, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from 81.6% in 2021.
The comprehensive reading rate in 2022 was 59.8%, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from 59.7% in 2021; the reading rate of newspapers was 23.5%, down 1.1% from 24.6% in 2021; the reading rate of periodicals was 17.7%, down 0.7 percentage points from 18.4% in 2021. The contact rate of digital reading methods (online reading, mobile reading, e-reader reading, Pad reading, etc.) was 80.1%, an increase of 0.5 percentage points compared with 79.6% in 2021.
According to the investigation of the book reading rate of China's urban and rural adult residents in 2022, it is found that the book reading rate of urban residents is 68.6%, higher than that of 68.5% in 2021, and that of rural residents is 50.2%, higher than 50.0% in 2021.

The average daily Internet contact time was 66.58 minutes, 1.84 minutes less than the 68.42 minutes in 2021. The average daily reading time of e-readers was 10.65 minutes, 1.13 minutes less than 11.78 minutes in 2021. The average daily exposure to Pad is 8.79 minutes, 1.03 minutes less than the 9.82 minutes in 2021.
According to the investigation of the listening habits of adult citizens, it is found that in 2022, more than 30% (35.5%) of adult citizens have the habit of listening to books, an increase of 2.8 percentage points compared with the average level of 2021 (32.7%).
From the comparison between urban and rural areas, the listening rate of China's urban adult residents was 37.1% in 2022, 5.6 percentage points higher than that of 31.5% of rural adult residents.
According to the investigation of the listening media of China's adult citizens, it is found that the proportion of people who choose "mobile audio App platform" to listen to books is relatively high, accounting for 21.6%; 13.5% of people choose to listen to books through "Wechat official account or Mini Program"; 10.5% of people choose to listen through "smart speakers"; and 8.5% and 5.2% of people choose to listen to books through "radio" and "audio reader or voice reader" respectively.
The survey data of the main forms of adult national listening show that Chinese adult citizens have a higher demand for reading activities. In 2022, 80.5% of adult citizens believed that the local authorities should hold reading activities or reading festivals. In order to meet the residents' high demand for reading activities, local national reading departments have launched brilliant national reading brand activities.
In 2022, China's adult citizens' awareness rate of brand reading activities reached 73.7%. Among them, the awareness rate of "local city reading festival" and "book fair book market" is the highest, the proportion of choices is 30.1%, the proportion of "agency, enterprise / campus reading activities" is 28.9%, and the awareness rates of "local reading club" and "urban reading hall" are 27.3% and 22.9%, respectively.
Awareness rate of national reading brand activities in 2022, the participation of Chinese adults in national reading brand activities reached 66.7%. Among them, the awareness rate of public libraries is 30.7%, the awareness rate of newspaper columns is 25.8%, and the awareness rate of community reading room / community study / city study is 27.1%.
Awareness rate of public reading service facilities from the use of all kinds of public reading service facilities, 14.9% of China's urban adult residents used public libraries in 2022; the proportion of community reading rooms / community studies / urban studies was 12.1%; and the proportion of over-use of newspaper columns was 10.3%.

Satisfaction with public reading service facilities in 2022, the book reading rate of minors aged 0-17 in China was 84.2%, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from 83.9% in 2021. In 2022, the per capita book reading volume of minors aged 0-17 in China was 11.14, an increase of 0.21 compared with 10.93 in 2021.

In terms of the book reading volume of minors, the per capita extracurricular reading of teenagers aged 14-17 in 2022 is the largest, 13.15, higher than 13.10 in 2021; the per capita reading of children aged 0-8 is 10.56, higher than that of 10.33 in 2021; the per capita reading of children aged 9-13 is 10.32, higher than 10.21 in 2021.
