The public demonstration took place at the annual COMDEX trade show in Chicago, where Microsoft co-founder and then CEO Bill Gates and his assistant Chris Cabosera (Chris Capossela) publicly demonstrated the Win98 system.

In order to demonstrate that the Win98 system supports plug and play, the Win98 system automatically blues the screen after the scanner is connected. This is the most famous blue screen incident in Microsoft's history, which caused the audience to laugh.

But Cabosera and Gates were not panicked. Instead, Gates calmly joked: "this must be the reason why we haven't launched Win98 yet."
