Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Xiao Zhan for the clue delivery! Beijing, April 21 (Xinhua) Google's parent company Alphabet has integrated its artificial intelligence (AI) research team into one department, the company's latest move to avoid falling behind in the AI competition.
Alphabet CEO Sandal Pichai (Sundar Pichai) said in a blog post on Thursday that the change would merge the brain team studied by Google and DeepMind, a company owned by Alphabet, into one division. DeepMind CEO Jamis Hassamis (Demis Hassabis) will lead the newly merged department. Meanwhile, James Manyika, Google's senior vice president of technology and society, will take over as Google's head of research. Pichai said the department would continue to work in the areas of privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate and responsible AI.
"with the support of Google Computing Resources, the integration of all these talents into a dedicated team will greatly accelerate our progress on AI." Pichai said. He said the establishment of the new department would ensure "bold and responsible development of GM AI".
The AI outpost of Phoenix New Media Technology has learned that Jeff Dean, the executive in charge of Google's AI and research, will leave management as part of the restructuring. Dean will take the new position of Google's chief scientist, work with Google Research and DeepMind to develop a new, more powerful AI system, and will not be in charge of a large team, according to people familiar with the matter. He will report directly to Pichai.
DeepMind, headquartered in London and formerly a subsidiary of Alphabet, has long been known for regularly launching AI breakthroughs, including its work on AlphaFold. AlphaFold is a technique that can predict the shape of proteins. DeepMind also launched AlphaGo, a self-taught strategy game called go that can be played better than any other human on the planet. Within the company, the department is often seen as a team working on AI concepts that may not be applied directly to Google products.
At the same time, Google Research is responsible for "Transformer" technology, a key building block of large language models. The technology powers current chatbots, including Google's Bard and OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Now, Google's restructuring seems to integrate these AI research work under the umbrella of DeepMind, marking a closer integration with the rest of Alphabet. Alphabet announced in its fourth-quarter results in February that DeepMind would be included in Alphabet's corporate costs from this year to reflect how the technology was integrated into other businesses rather than as part of the less direct "other bets" (other Bets) investment class.
In February this year, Alphabet hastily announced the launch of "Bard" to compete with ChatGPT. On Feb. 8, the company lost $100 billion in market value after Bard shared inaccurate information in a promotional video and a company event failed to impress investors.
Google's efforts to hastily launch generative AI products in order to compete successfully with OpenAI are reported to have demoralized employees. Employees say Google is making compromises to misinformation and other hazards to catch up with ChatGPT's huge success.
