CTOnews.com, April 20 (Xinhua)-- Hyundai Motor said it will work with South Korean research institutions to develop a development model of the lunar mobile robot "Rover", which is expected to launch in 2027, Yonhap news agency reported.

From the concept image of "Rover", a special mobile robot for lunar exploration released by Hyundai Group, the overall weight of Rover is about 70kg, and it will be composed of two parts, one equipped with solar self-charging system and the other with self-driving technology of Hyundai car. The upper part is responsible for carrying out exploration on the lunar surface, while the lower part of the drive system will be developed into a platform that can walk freely on the lunar surface.

Hyundai Automobile said that the goal of Hyundai Automobile is to expand the field of human mobile travel experience and contribute to human progress. It is expected to complete the development of the model as early as the second half of next year and launch a formal product capable of exploring the lunar surface in 2027.

CTOnews.com added: in July last year, Hyundai signed a joint research cooperation agreement (MOU) with six research institutions, namely, Korea Astronomical Research Institute, Korea Electronic Communications Research Institute, Korea Construction Technology Research Institute, Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and Korea Automobile Research Institute. After discussion with all parties, Hyundai defined the use of the robot as "landing at the South Pole of the moon to carry out scientific tasks such as mining and environmental exploration."
