CTOnews.com, April 18 (Xinhua)-- according to the TechInsights research report, revenue in the global smartphone application processor market increased by 12% to US $34.2 billion in 2022 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 235.296 billion yuan). Qualcomm, Apple, MediaTek, Samsung LSI and Ziguang Zhanrui ranked among the top five revenue shares in the smartphone application processor market in 2022. However, due to OEM inventory adjustment and macro weakness, the application processor market, especially Android app processor vendors, face serious challenges in the second half of 2022.

Here are some highlights:

Qualcomm took the lead with 39% of revenue, followed by Apple (30%) and MediaTek (24%).

5G application processor shipments accounted for 56% of total smartphone application processor shipments in 2022.

Shipments of 7nm / 6nm-based smartphone application processors were hit hard in 2022 due to the weakness of the mid-range 5G.

Application processors manufactured by 7nm and below account for 57% of total shipments.

TSMC has expanded its contract manufacturing lead over Samsung with the help of the relationship between Apple, MediaTek and Qualcomm. In addition, the weakness of Samsung's Exynos application processor has also contributed to TSMC's growth. As a result, TSMC accounted for 85% of the smartphone application processor contract manufacturing market in 2022.

Shipments of Android smartphone application processor vendors fell 13% in 2022 due to the weak Chinese market, inventory adjustments and macroeconomic downturn.

Despite the sharp drop in shipments, Qualcomm's revenue rose 17 per cent, driven by an increased portfolio of processors for high-end applications. According to TechInsights, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series application processors shipped more than 100 million units in 2022 for the second year in a row. Of course, Qualcomm's 75 per cent share of Samsung's Galaxy S22 series also plays a role.

The smartphone application processor market is increasingly driven by processor content, and TechInsights's research supports this view-as we see revenue growth outpacing shipments.

Shipments of Samsung LSI's Exynos smartphone app processors reached their lowest level in eight years in 2022. In 2022, Samsung lost its share of the high-end market to Qualcomm. However, the company has recovered some shipments thanks to midrange application processors Exynos 1280 and 850. Samsung is the only supplier of application processors that saw month-on-month growth in shipments in the second half of 22.

Shipments of MediaTek's smartphone application processors declined for the fifth consecutive quarter on Q4 in 2022. Despite the challenges in the second half of the year, the company's share of shipments increased by 3 per cent in 2022. The company has seen good growth at the top end of the market, but the weak mid-market has taken a heavy toll on its revenue and shipments. In addition, the company's Chinese customers did not perform well because of inventory problems.

Google's shipments grew more than fivefold in 2022, driven by increased demand for the Pixel 6ax 7 series. However, unlike other Android app processor vendors, Google currently does not have its own 5G modem technology.

Despite inventory challenges in the second half of the year, 2022 will be a year of growth for smartphone application processor vendors. As Apple, Samsung and Chinese OEM manufacturers clear their inventory, the market is likely to adjust itself in 2023. As in 2022, 2023 is likely to be dominated by high-end application processors. By the end of 2023, however, midrange demand is likely to pick up. TechInsights expects Qualcomm to actively participate in the mid-market in 2024.
