Recently, a photographer won a world-famous photography award, but he voluntarily admitted that his work was an image generated by artificial intelligence and refused to accept the award.

German artist Boris Eldagsen's black-and-white portrait photography PSEUDOMNESIA: The Electricia won the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards in the Creative category. However, Eldarson admitted on his website that the work was actually generated by artificial intelligence, not traditional photography.

Photo source: Boris Eldarson's personal website It is reported that the official press release called the winning work "an impressive black and white portrait of two women from different eras, reminiscent of the visual language of family portraits in the 1940s. However, Eldarson revealed the truth and refused to accept the award.

Eldarson writes: "I entered as a cheeky monkey to test whether the race was ready for AI imagery. He also called for an open discussion in the global photography community about what photography is and isn't, and whether the umbrella of photography is big enough to allow AI images to be added.

Eldarson said he has been working in photography for 30 years and recently began using artificial intelligence for artistic creation. He wrote that the winning work was generated using his extensive photographic knowledge through a complex interaction of rapid engineering design, image restoration and image extension techniques.

A spokesman for the World Photography Organization said that although the judges knew that artificial intelligence was used to create the image, they understood that it was "co-creation" with artificial intelligence, and Eldarson "deliberately" misled them.

"experimental imaging techniques such as cyanography, radiography and cutting-edge digital practices are welcome for the creative entries in the open competition," the spokesman said. "They believe that after communicating with Eldarson and receiving his own assurance that his entry meets the creative criteria, they support him in his entry. The spokesman said World Photography initially even planned to hold a Q & A with Eldarson, but later "suspended our activities with the artist" and that the winning entries had been removed from the competition website "at his will."

"We recognize the importance of this topic and its impact on image making today," the spokesperson said. We look forward to exploring this theme further through various channels and projects and welcome dialogue around it. He also said that while AI elements are relevant to the artistic context of image production, creative awards have been and continue to be a platform to support photographers and artists to demonstrate excellence in the media field.

This isn't the first time an AI-generated image has won an art prize. Last year, the top prize in the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts competition was awarded to an AI-generated image, sparking a debate among artists over whether AI-generated images should be honored.
