CTOnews.com, April 18 (Xinhua)-- Canadian hacker Gary Bowser, who was arrested for hacking Nintendo Switch and other game consoles, was recently released from a US federal prison and is waiting to be repatriated to Canada, according to TorrentFreak. In an interview with YouTube anchor Nick Moses, he revealed that he was transferred to a detention center in Washington last month, where he is now waiting to return to his native Canada.

Gary Bowser is a member of Team Xecuter, a notorious hacker team that makes and sells modular chips used to crack Nintendo Switch, 3DS, NES Classic Edition, Sony PlayStation Classic and other game consoles so that users can play pirated games. In 2020, Gary Bowser was arrested for fraud and extradited to the United States from the Dominican Republic and sentenced to 40 months in prison. He said his sentence was shortened by more than two years as a result of good behaviour.

Although Gary Bowser has been released from prison, he still has to pay Nintendo up to $14.5 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 99.615 million yuan) in compensation. He agreed to pay $10 million to settle Nintendo's piracy lawsuit, in addition to another federal court order requiring him to pay Nintendo $4.5 million. Gary Bowser says he has only repaid $175 so far.

Prosecutors say Team Xecuter's cracked consoles and module sales cost Nintendo and other console makers 65 million dollars. Gary Bowser is the public face and main salesperson of Team Xecuter, and one of Nintendo's most hated enemies.
