Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, April 17 (Xinhua)-- LG shows a new OLED panel etching technology being developed for Apple, which will lead to thinner hybrid OLED panels while reducing production costs, according to The Elec.
It is reported that this hybrid technology will combine rigid OLED glass substrates with flexible OLED thin film packaging (TFE), making the panel thinner than rigid OLED panels and cheaper than flexible OLED panels because it does not require a backlight layer.
However, the current "ultra-thin glass" can easily break when transferred to the next process of the production line, so LG is developing simultaneous etching and cutting processes to reduce production risk.
Reports of the technology date back to August 2022, with news that Apple may introduce the technology for iPad by 2024.
Today's report shows that currently LG will only apply this new technology to its eighth-generation OLED product line, while next year's iPad model will continue to use LG's existing sixth-generation OLED production line, with etching handled by Avatec.
Of course, Samsung started developing hybrid OLED technology earlier than LG and deployed it to the sixth-generation OLED production line to produce panels for iPad, with Chemtronics responsible for etching.
However, the report did not mention which iPad models would be the first to introduce the technology, but Ross Young had previously revealed that Apple planned to launch its first 11-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024.
Related readings:
"combining the advantages of flexible and rigid OLED, Samsung and LG are preparing the mass production screen for Apple's next iPad Pro."
"made into the ultra-thin substrate of 0.2mm, it is reported that Chemtronics is exclusively responsible for the post-processing etching process of Apple OLED iPad."
"sources say that the OLED iPad released by Apple next year will exceed $1500."
