Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, April 17 (Xinhua)-- Apple is preparing to allow iPhone users to install apps from unofficial stores for the first time in iOS 17, Mark Gurman said. This kind of behavior is commonly referred to as side loading, which means that developers no longer have to pay 15% to 30% of Apple's App Store.

As previously reported by CTOnews.com, the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), to be implemented in March 2024, requires gatekeepers to open their services and platforms to other companies and developers. In addition, DMA may also make major changes to Apple's Messages, FaceTime, Siri, and so on.

According to Gurman, Apple plans to introduce side support for the iOS next year to comply with new European regulations.

Until then, Apple had insisted that "side loading will undermine the privacy and security on which iPhone users rely", making them more vulnerable to malware, fraud, data tracking and other attacks. But in any case, Apple will have to comply with DMA rules in the end, or it could face a fine of 20 per cent of the highest global revenue.

In a report in December 2022, Mr. Gurman said Apple was considering implementing security requirements such as authentication, and that it could charge for the process instead of taking a percentage of App fees. Currently, Apple has set up an authentication system on Mac that allows users to securely access applications other than App Store.

Of course, we are not sure whether Apple will introduce this strategy outside the EU, but if there is similar legislation in other countries, we believe Apple will popularize it. For example, the United States is considering legislation to require Apple to allow side loading.
