For those games that lack online capabilities, multiplayer online MOD has always been the dream and pursuit of many players. Working with friends to explore the vast world, or the tough BOSS in a group fight, the fun of stand-alone games is usually enhanced by the seasoning of "friends".
Considering the system closeness of the mainframe platform, the MOD field of mainframe exclusive games is often a wild area of unmanned development. But that doesn't stop players from loving the game, and in November 2021, game anchor PointCrow announced a $10,000 reward for the production of a multiplayer online MOD for the six-year-old Legend of Zelda: the breath of the Wilderness.
After a year of development, on April 5 this year, PointCrow finally brought his promised multiplayer MOD to the majority of players. Nintendo, which has the most powerful legal department in the Eastern Hemisphere, has not been idle. On April 7, two days after the official release of multi-person MOD, PointCrow received a copyright warning from Nintendo.
According to PointCrow, Nintendo launched a copyright claim against the pipeline, blocking a large number of videos related to "the breath of the wilderness" on his account. Although some videos have been restored, there are still a few videos that cannot be played, and without exception, all of them have lost their original revenue.
Nintendo has always been known for its strict copyright control. As early as 2018, they specifically issued copyright guidelines for their games, which explicitly mentioned that "modified game software is not allowed to be released." PointCrow's multi-player MOD undoubtedly violated the relevant regulations, and it can only be regarded as bad luck to get a copyright cannon.
Only from PointCrow's point of view, he has the opposite view of MOD from Nintendo. He believes that it is fans' love and innovation that keeps the Wild breath player community alive and makes players who know nothing about the game fall in love with Zelda.
PointCrow's "breath of the wilderness"-related videos were played so much that it attracted a large number of passers-by, but then again, multiplayer online MOD is still working despite Nintendo's copyright warnings. For a long time, the copyright issue of the simulator has always been difficult to define. Adhering to the principle of "no ROM sharing is no infringement", PointCrow repeatedly stressed in the installation instructions that "the sharing of pirated resources is prohibited", and Nintendo did not kill all of these MOD, but banned the profitability of his video.
In principle, the authentic purchase of "wilderness breath" can also play normally multiplayer MOD. PointCrow has filed a complaint with the oil pipe, hoping to withdraw its punishment, but Nintendo has not responded to the matter. Of course, for Nintendo, instead of continuing to compete with players in the Wild breath, it is better to start preparing for how to deal with the various copyright disputes that will appear in tears of the Kingdom in the future.
