April 14 (Xinhua)-- aircraft manufacturer Boeing warned on Thursday that the production and delivery of 737 Max will be affected in the short term due to quality problems in parts supplied by suppliers.

Boeing said its supplier Spirit AeroSystems told the company that two parts at the back of the fuselage used a "non-standard" manufacturing process. The problem affects Boeing's most popular 737 Max 8, whose customers include American Airlines and Southwest Airlines. In addition, it also affects some models such as 737 Max 7, 737 8200 and Pmuri 8.

However, Boeing stressed that this issue is not "directly related to flight safety issues, the current active service aircraft can still continue to fly safely." But the problem could affect a large number of 737 MAX aircraft that have not yet been delivered, including those currently in production and in stock.

Various problems are often encountered in the process of aircraft production, and the problem of parts and components of Spirit AeroSystems is only the latest one.

Boeing's shares fell 4 per cent in after-hours trading on Thursday after Boeing disclosed the problems. Spirit AeroSystems's shares fell nearly 8 per cent. Spirit AeroSystems is currently the world's largest independent non-original equipment manufacturer in the field of civil aircraft structure.

Spirit AeroSystems said in a statement that it had notified Boeing of "quality problems" with some 737 models.

"Spirit AeroSystems is committed to the inspection and maintenance of the affected fuselage. We will continue to coordinate closely with our customers to resolve this problem and minimize the impact while maintaining our safety concerns."

Boeing said it had notified the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the problem and was inspecting and dealing with the fuselage as needed.

"We expect delivery of the 737 MAX to decline in the near future after this necessary work is completed," Boeing said in a statement. "We are sorry for the customers who have been affected and re-communicate their delivery schedules. We will provide more information in the coming days and weeks to give them a better understanding of the impact of delivery."

This is the latest production problem faced by Boeing and its customers. Earlier this year, Boeing suspended delivery of its 787 Dreamliner for several weeks to resolve data analysis deficiencies. In 2021 and 2022, the company worked to address other production defects in wide-body airliners, which led to a suspension of delivery for several months.

Boeing reported on Tuesday that it delivered 64 aircraft in March, the highest level since December last year, and there is a shortage of new aircraft across the industry. Many airline executives say a tight supply of aircraft is one of the main challenges in increasing flights ahead of the peak travel season.

A spokesman for American Airlines said in a statement: "We are aware of this issue and are coordinating with Boeing to understand how it may affect our MAX delivery."
