CTOnews.com April 13 news, Apple's mobile payment service Apple Pay has just launched in South Korea, it has been a patent infringement claim by a Korean company. The company claims that Apple Pay uses almost the same mechanism as the patent it filed in 2005.

Bizmodeline, as Business Korea reports, is a patent assertion entity, meaning a company that applies for or buys patents and earns revenue through litigation or licensing agreements. Bizmodeline didn't contact Apple directly or file a lawsuit. Instead, Bizmodeline sent an email to four Korean card companies that support Apple Pay-Hyundai Card, Shinhan Card, KB Card and Hana Card-advising them to seek legal advice on the matter.

Bizmodeline owns a patent for a method of making payments using a mobile phone. Specifically, the user puts the mobile phone close to the payment terminal, then generates a token code for one-time verification on the mobile phone, sends this code to the payment terminal through near field communication (NFC) technology, and then the server of the card issuing institution receives this code through its payment network for verification, and processes the payment according to the verification result.

Bizmodeline believes Apple Pay's approach is very similar to its patent content, including various claims. The company said it would have to take legal action if Apple was unwilling to negotiate a reasonable licensing agreement with it.

CTOnews.com understands that patents cited by patent claiming entities are usually too broad to be granted at all, but Bizmodeline's claim doesn't seem so far-fetched. But the goal may be the same as the usual patent troll: to get apple to pay a fee to get out of trouble.
