CTOnews.com, April 13 (Xinhua)-- handheld gaming devices have become increasingly popular in recent years, such as the popular Steam Deck, a handset that can run Linux or Windows. However, Windows 11 is not a very suitable system for operating on small screens and handle buttons, and Microsoft is aware of this problem. Now it has been revealed that Microsoft has tried to solve this problem through the hackathon project held in September last year.

According to CTOnews.com, Microsoft Hackathon is an internal event held by Microsoft every year, where employees and teams can experiment with ideas they don't normally do. As a result, most hackathon projects may not actually be released, but it does not rule out the possibility that some projects will eventually become actual products.

According to the whistleblower @ _ h0x0d_, one of the hackathon projects focuses on solving this problem. The project, called Windows Handheld Mode (Windows handheld Mode), details a new game interface that will replace the normal Windows 11 desktop interface on handheld gaming devices and aims to make it easier for users to launch games and manipulate the Windows interface with game controllers.

The project also shows some conceptual designs for the next-generation Windows, including a search bar and system tray at the top, and an application launcher similar to Dock at the bottom.

At present, this is still a hackathon project, but hopefully it will become a real feature and be released in the next generation of Windows. This form of equipment is increasingly being tried by OEM manufacturers. Recently, Asustek released the ROG Ally, a Steam Deck competition with Windows 11 pre-installed, which will greatly benefit from features like Windows Handheld Mode.
