The supply chain is expected to mass-produce Apple's Metalens, which is expected to replace iPad's Face ID Tx plastic lens, in 2024.

TSMC and Caiyu are key Metalens process suppliers for Apple. Taking into account the contribution of Metalens to revenue and profits, Caiyu is the main beneficiary.

If the Metalens for 2024 iPad is shipped smoothly, iPhone Face ID is expected to adopt Metalens in 2025 or 2026 (which is currently more likely).

Compared with the existing plastic lens, Metalens has the advantages of low cost and low height.

From a technical point of view, after Face ID Tx, Metalens may replace the existing plastic lens applications as Face ID Rx or ToF Tx / Rx in the short term.

Given the progress in process and algorithms, the Metalens will not replace the lowest-level plastic lenses of existing camera cameras until 2028-2030 at the earliest. In the foreseeable future, Metalens will not have any impact on the upgrade trend of existing plastic lenses (such as 7p to 8p, periscope, etc.), but investors should pay attention to the fact that Metalens will gradually replace existing plastic lenses in 3D sensing applications in the next few years.

There are three long-term strategic objectives for Apple to develop Metalens:

(1) reduce dependence on existing plastic lenses

(2) the technical and cost advantages of Metalens are beneficial to product design and sales.

(3) Apple expects that Metalens will be widely used in Apple Glasses (non-AR / MR) that will be produced as soon as 2026 or 2027.

The glasses-type head-mounted display device is a killer app for Metalens. If glasses-type head-mounted display devices are successful, Metalens shipments are expected to grow explosively.

At present, Gale shares is a global leader in Metalens module and fitting production technology. If Apple can drive the application trend of Metalens, then Gale shares will be one of the main beneficiaries of this trend.
