Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens South China Daniel Wu and Xiao Zhan for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, April 13 (Xinhua)-- Apple plans to release an iPhone SE with a custom-designed 5G baseband chip in 2025, analyst Jeff Pu said. In a research report with Haitong International Securities on Tuesday, he said the baseband chip would be produced by TSMC.

Analyst Guo Mingyi previously said that after Apple restarted the development of the fourth-generation iPhone SE, the model is expected to be equipped with a 6.1in OLED display and a 5G baseband chip designed by Apple. He said the chip would be manufactured using TSMC's 4nm process and would only support bands below 6GHz, meaning it would not support millimeter waves initially.

Guo Mingyi previously said that mass production of the fourth-generation iPhone SE will begin in the first half of 2024. Qualcomm CEO Ammon also expects the time frame of Apple's 5G baseband chip to be 2024, but Jeff Pu believes it has been postponed to 2025.

In addition, blogger @ Mobile Chip Talent also said that Apple's self-research baseband has been postponed until 2025. If this news is true, then next year's iPhone 16 / Pro series (temporarily called) will not need Apple's own 5G baseband.

The current iPhone SE, released in March 2022, carries the Snapdragon X57 baseband chip customized by Qualcomm for the sub-6GHz 5G. The 4.7in device is Apple's last iPhone with Home buttons and Touch ID, and the next iPhone SE is expected to be equipped with Face ID, which Guo said will use a design similar to the standard iPhone 14 model.

As previously reported by CTOnews.com, Apple acquired most of Intel's smartphone baseband business in 2019 to design its own iPhone baseband chip, a move that will reduce its dependence on Qualcomm, though it has been slow to develop it.
