Intel's newly submitted Linux patch (with an official link to CTOnews.com) suggests that Meteor Lake will support L4 caching, which is really rare in processors. "on MTL, GT can no longer be allocated on LLC-only CPU can. This, together with support for ADM / L4 cache, is called MOCS / PAT table update."
Of course, it is not clear what the "ADM" in the patch stands for, and the code does not expose the size of the ADM. We think it's probably just a marketing term for L4 caching.
Historically, Intel added 128MB's eDRAM to 14nm's original Broadwell (i7-5775C and i5-5765C, essentially the 14nm version of Haswell), which can be used as an L4 cache for CPU. In addition, some Intel Coffee Lake-U processors also have 128MB's eDRAM cache.
Of course, Intel only uses this design in a few chips for NUC, because the L4 cache is slow, so it is difficult to improve system performance except for integrated graphics cards.
During the demonstration of Hot Chips 34, Intel shared the schematic diagram of Meteor Lake, which will adopt Intel 4 process and external process, and introduce "Tile" design for the first time, integrating four different parts: CPU, SOC, graphics and IOE.
So, the basic part of Meteor Lake may contain L4 cache, just like Ponte Vecchio's 144MB secondary cache, but we are not sure which part it will be placed in, but Intel seems to have planned to ban Meteor Lake's iGPU from accessing LLC (last-level cache), only the CPU part can, so it is definitely not the graphics part.
To put it simply, the design is similar to AMD's Ryzen APU, whose CPU kernel and iGPU cache are not shared, which means that its kernel is more dependent on high-frequency dual-channel memory.
According to SquashBionic, MTL-S supports DDR5-6400 memory, but it depends on the configuration of die. He said: at present, the engineering sample MTL-S (6: 8) supports 5600 MT / s, while MTL-S (6: 16) supports 6400 MT / s.
In addition, according to @ 9550pro, Intel's new Meteor Lake series seems to be available only on low-voltage platforms. At least this year's new desktop processors and mobile HX processors are still the Refresh version of the 13th generation of Core Raptor Lake, and new motherboards plus new architecture CPU products will not be available until next year. Of course, both are called 14-generation Core.
In terms of process, Intel announced that the Intel 7 process has been mass produced and Intel 4 production is ready. With the launch of Meteor Lake, Intel 4 production capacity will be increased in the second half of this year. In addition, the Intel 3 process is also moving forward as planned, and the test chips of the Intel 20A and 18A processes have been rolled out.
