Chip manufacturers cooperate with mobile phone manufacturers to speed up the commercialization of 5G NTN

Non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology enables end-users to transmit data in remote areas through uplink (Uplink) and downlink (Downlink) transmission by low-orbit satellites, which makes up for the lack of coverage of 5G infrastructure in remote areas. With the rise of 5G non-terrestrial network trend, chip manufacturers are trying to enhance the market share of satellite communication products. At present, the major chip manufacturers working with handset manufacturers to develop 5G NTN technology are Qualcomm, MediaTek and Samsung. Qualcomm cooperates with OPPO, Xiaomi and vivo to integrate Snapdragon satellite communications chips into mobile phones, while MediaTek cooperates with British handset manufacturer Bullitt Group to install two-way data transmission satellite communications chips in mobile phones. Compared with the aforementioned chip manufacturers, which provide satellite communication function chips to mobile phone manufacturers through direct supply, Samsung Electronics will integrate the satellite communication function chips with its mobile phones after completing the test of two-way satellite link data technology, to create its own satellite communication ecosystem, and with the increase in the number of mobile phone manufacturers using satellite communication functions in the future, it will also accelerate the commercialization of 5G NTN technology.

Further from the challenges faced by 5G NTN technology, at the present stage, 5G fixed wireless access (Fixed Wireless Access) Under the premise of parallel development of FWA and NTN technology, as 5G NTN technology is still in its early stage of development, cost competitiveness may be a bottleneck in the short term. Even if the penetration rate of 5G mobile satellite communication phones continues to rise, it still hinders consumers from adopting mobile satellite functions, so 5G NTN technology can not highlight its competitive advantage in the short term. From the point of view of the enterprise side, it is still necessary to wait for the 5G NTN technology to mature and reduce the cost before it can attract enterprise users in remote areas to consider using 5G NTN technology to develop related vertical applications.

According to TrendForce Jibang Consulting, the rapid development of NTN technology is attributed to the rapid increase in the number of Leo satellites worldwide. At present, the satellite operator with the largest number of Leo satellites launched is Space X, which launched a total of 4002 satellites before March 2023, accounting for 84% of the global launch, followed by Oneweb's 582and Telesat's 80 satellites, while the smaller satellite operators Iridium, Globalstar and Inmarsat launched a total of 104satellites. As Leo satellites are expected to reach the global coverage target by 2026, MediaTek and Samsung electronics chip manufacturers will also develop IoT NTN solutions to further explore the application of satellite communications in the Internet of things scenario, on the whole, the popularization of satellite communication functions and the development of Internet of things applications will become the key factors for the commercialization of 5G NTN technology.
