Generative AI is an AI system that can generate text, images, or other media according to prompts. The latter tells the story of a theme park where robots are preloaded with storylines and personalities for wealthy human guests to interact with. According to CTOnews.com, the team for the experiment was made up of five Stanford scientists and one Google scientist. They published an abstract on the Cornell University website in which they introduced the concept of "generative agent" (generative agents), a computing software agent that can simulate trusted human behavior. " Generative agents will get up, make breakfast and go to work; artists will paint and writers will write; they will form opinions, notice each other, and initiate conversations; they will remember and review the past days and plan the next day. " The abstract of the paper says.

To enable these agents to communicate in natural language, the researchers used a large language model (LLM) ChatGPT to store the experiences of each character and make the robots talk to each other, showing the behavior of a real social group. When a robot is set to hold a party, other agents are also involved. They send invitations, make plans and coordinate to arrive at the party at the same time. The researchers also shared a simulated playback video to show the experiment.

For comparison, the researchers also used a control group of 25 real humans. They play roles and are observed by observers. Observers believe that real humans are less real than their AI counterparts.

In the paper, the researchers analyzed the limitations and errors of their settings, some of which were funny, such as multiple agents entering a bathroom that could only accommodate one person at the same time, and residents of a virtual town leaving the cafe at lunchtime.
