In order to enhance its competitiveness, Samsung spared no effort to dig out industry leaders, set up its own GPU team, and cooperate deeply with AMD to introduce multi-generation high-performance, ultra-low-power AMD Radeon graphics solutions.
According to 36 krypton, the former ideal car AI chip No.1 Pride has joined Samsung as a core member of its GPU team, responsible for project planning and team creation. At the time of the ideal car, pride reported to Xie Yan, the head of the ideal automobile system research and development department. Before joining the ideal car, Jiao Qiao was the head of the chip technology department of Aridamo Institute, focusing on artificial intelligence chips, leading the launch of the "Hanguang 800" chip. In an earlier period, Jiao Qiao also participated in the creation of teams in the United States and Shanghai at Huawei to promote GPU development.
Samsung is also recently in contact with Jiao Guofang, co-founder of Bishi Technology, who was responsible for creating Qualcomm Snapdragon team, developing five-generation Adreno GPU architecture and Huawei Hongmeng OS image processor, the report said.
According to CTOnews.com, Samsung's partnership with AMD began in 2019, when Samsung licensed the AMD RDNA graphics architecture. After three years of hard work, Samsung launched a mobile GPU--Xclipse based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture. This is a mobile GPU with hardware-accelerated RayTracing and variable rate shading, which can achieve graphics similar to mainframe games on mobile devices. Samsung installed Xclipse on Exynos 2200 chip and applied it to Galaxy S22 series.
However, due to the lack of 4nm process and Xclipse optimization, Exynos 2200 does not perform well in terms of heating, power consumption and battery life, resulting in user complaints and lawsuits in South Korea, Europe and other markets. To save its image, Samsung suspended the Exynos 2200 and switched to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.
To avoid repeating the same mistake, Samsung renewed its license agreement with AMD and expanded the scope of cooperation. The two sides will jointly develop multi-generation mobile GPU with high performance and ultra-low power consumption, and apply it to next-generation chips such as Exynos 2400 and Exynos 2500. These chips will be suitable for the Galaxy series of smartphones and are expected to be mass produced using the second generation 3nm GAA process in the second half of 2024.
Industry insiders believe that Samsung accelerated its self-development of GPU in order to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and ARM and provide differentiated competitiveness. If Samsung and AMD cooperate successfully, it will change the pattern of mobile GPU and bring a better gaming experience for smartphone users.
